Does your child love to watch Sid the Science Kid on PBS?  Brandon does!  There’s something about the catchy tune and the every-day projects they do that’s so easy to relate to and accessible for pre-school aged children.  In the show, the kids go to school, perform everyday tasks like washing hands, and introduce kids to special events like getting flu shots.  Sid is really interested in how things work, and uses his microphone to interview people.

The Big Fat Foam Bat is a simple 21″ foam bat, which comes with a big foam ball.  It’s recommended for kids aged 5+, but you’ll know when your child is ready.    The one we received to review is blue with a red ball, but the ones I’ve seen online are all green.

I like that they are both made of foam, because I’ve been “accidentally” hit more than once, and so has just about every piece of furniture in the house.  Of course, it’s also great for outdoor play and is satisfyingly easy to hit for kids because the ball is so big.

I’ve previously reviewed a few other games from Patch Products – Pass the Pup, Uberstix, and Know it or Blow it.  I’d love to tell you about a new product they just came out with – the 3D Sneaky Puzzle – Singin’ Sea Creatures.

With all the 3D stuff everywhere these days (movies, laptops, posters, games, toys, even chalk!), Patch Products has this new 46-piece puzzle that comes with a pair of 3D glasses.  Designed for kids ages 3 and up, the pieces are made well and don’t have any of the problems that you see with some other puzzles.  Each piece is unique, and the bright colors make it relatively easy to figure out where the pieces go.

I find that puzzles which aren’t in the shape of a rectangle are a little harder for kids to figure out (especially the edge pieces), so this might be better for children who are a little older or who have mastered puzzling.   Brandon was able to put 2 pieces together when I gave him 2 that go together, and he loved sporting the glasses and checking out the 3D.  At 2 years and 3 months, he’s starting to really love putting puzzles together and seeing the end result.

As for the 3D aspect of it, the glasses work really well!  The sea creatures really pop out, and if you look carefully, you can see the hidden letters and numbers floating around in the sea behind them.  Fun!

Brandon is 2 years and 3 months old, and he immediately knew what to do when the package was opened.  We put some batteries in for him (you could also use the included AC adapter), and off he went.  The touch screen is really intuitive, and his favorite game is Music Maestro because he loves pianos.  Some of the games are keyboard-only, and some are touch screen only.

I think he will definitely be growing into this toy, and I can see this as a great distraction for traveling.  There is a headphone jack for when you need to be in a quiet area.  This is a great alternative to the handheld gaming devices out there, especially for younger children, and the fact that it is more educational than other games out there is a huge plus!

Creativity is such an important part of children’s development.  This Step2 Easel for Two makes it fun to draw and spell, and also allows children to utilize several different mediums – chalk board, dry erase board, foam magnetic letters and numbers, and a clip for holding regular paper if you want to use crayons or paint.  You can even fold it up for storage when you’re not using it.

It is the perfect size for kids – Brandon is 2 right now (but tall for his age) and can’t quite reach the very very top of the easel.  It’s recommended for ages 3 and up, but in my opinion would be great for any kids who can stand on their own and won’t eat the magnets.  :)

Brandon loves this easel, and has been using it almost every day.  He likes to arrange the magnets by letter – see the 5 O’s and 3 E’s he put together?  The letters come in 4 different colored sheets that you punch the letters out of.  Brandon likes to put the original magnet sheet on the board, and then use it like a puzzle to put the letters back into the sheet.

The easel doesn’t come with anything else except the letters, so we purchased some “sidewalk chalk” (found it for $1 at Walgreens!) for him and use a dusting cloth for an eraser.  It works great!  You can also use dry erase markers on the magnetic side and clip a piece of paper to either side for crayons or painting.  I’m also pleased with how sturdy it is.

The first product I selected is the Organic Giraffee Blankie by miYim ($14.99).  The soft plush giraffe head is attached to a 10″ x 10″ blankie, and is a perfect “lovie” for your baby.  Every child needs a comfort item to help them fall asleep, and this one is safe, soft, and certified organic for those who need something to chew on.  Ages birth+.

The next 2 products are wooden toys from Plan Toys – the Stacking Rings ($17.99), and the Racing Car ($4.99).  We’ve had several different stacking toys, but this one is definitely one of B’s favorites.  I’m not sure if it’s the perfect size of each ring, the pretty colors, or the satisfying clink of wood on wood, but this stacking ring set is going to provide lots of fun for a wide range of ages.  It’s great for babies who are just enjoying playing with colorful things, and even for preschoolers who learning how to stack them in the right order.  You can also play other games (included in the instructions), like try to stack the cone from smallest to largest.

Another Plan Toys favorite is the racing car.  Just pull it back, and watch it go!  I keep this one in my “goodie bag” for when we go out to eat, or when we are going on a trip.  It’s the perfect size for taking with you, rolls really well, doesn’t make any loud annoying sounds, and there’s something about the springy head that Brandon loves.  Plus, it’s a car, which he loves by default.

The next product is the Melissa & Doug Flapping Penguin Push Toy ($24.99).  There’s something about push toys that is just appealing to kids.  Ever since Brandon had enough dexterity to move his arm back and forth, he loved push toys on a stick.  Then when learned how to stand, he always wanted to be pushing something around.  He’s 2 now, and to this day he still loves pushing this around!  This particular penguin flaps its wings when you push it – so cute.   Recommended for children ages 1+.

The last item is the Haba Biofino Ice Cream Cones ($13.99).  Haba is a German company, and makes the cutest play foods.  Brandon loves playing in his pretend kitchen, and he also loves ice cream so this one was a natural choice for us.  The cone is firm, and the ice cream parts are squishy.  You can remove the ice cream from the cone, and flip it upside down to reveal another flavor (clever!).  Note that you only get 2 cones in this pack, and the image just shows the different ice cream options after flipping.  Brandon’s favorite flavor is chocolate, and he likes to eat the bottom of the cone first, to maximize the mess I have to clean up.  Even when pretending.
