Spiffies

About Spiffies:

Pediatrician Ray Wagner and his wife, Marti Wagner, President of DR Products, introduced Spiffies Tooth Wipes at the Annual Meeting of the American Pediatric Dentistry in May 2004. This knowledgeable and critical audience was immediately receptive to Spiffies Tooth Wipes. Today Spiffies has a growing retail distribution both overseas and in the U.S.

In addition to being a practicing pediatrician, Dr. Wagner is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at A.T. Still School of Osteopathic Medicine near Phoenix. He always mentions the importance of educating parents about oral health to his medical students. Marti Wagner brings her wealth of experience and passion to the day-to-day operations and shares her husband’s advocacy for improving the oral health of children throughout the world.

Most parents either don’t know that they should be brushing or wiping their child’s teeth, or have too difficult a time and just give up.  Spiffies is a tooth wipe that uses Xylitol, a natural sweetener found in plants and fruits.  Xylitol has also been found in many studies to prevent or stop cavities and even reverse tooth decay.  Read more about the benefits of Xylitol here.

Spiffies for infants can be used on baby’s gums before the teeth even come in, or just as they are starting to emerge.  You can use them just as you would use a toothbrush, 3 times a day.  They are intended for infants 4 months and older, and come in 3 yummy flavors – grape, apple, and mango.  They contain no flouride.

Brandon had 4 cavities by the time he was 18 months old, and I so wish I had known about Spiffies at that time.  It was one of the hardest things I had to do to watch him get put under to get his cavities filled.  Please please take care of your children’s teeth, and if you don’t use Spiffies, at least wipe their gums/teeth with a wet washcloth.

Facts about childhood tooth decay:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood.
  • Dental cavities in baby teeth are a chronic infection that can turn into a bigger problem.
  • Tooth decay is almost always completely preventable.
  • Many young children cannot describe the pain that cavities cause. They may instead act tired, fussy and restless. They may not sleep well at night.

I use a damp toothbrush with soft bristles to brush my daughter’s teeth, gums, and tongue twice daily. Before she had teeth, I used a wet washcloth (that she liked to suck on).
