I saw this article, and I immediately spent more time looking into how the Environmental Law Foundation (ELF), a Bay area based non-profit, recently found that 85% of drinks and foods labeled for kids could contain high enough levels of lead in one serving to warrant a warning label.
Specifically, they looked at boxed juices (apple and grape), and prepackaged fruits (pears, peaches, and fruit cocktail) including BABY FOOD! Both organic and conventional products are on this list, including products from Earth’s Best Organic, 365 Everyday Value Organic, Trader Joe’s, as well as Welch’s, Minute Maid, Gerber, Del Monte, and Dole. I included the full list here so you can browse it easily. More info can be found on the ELF website. I would love to see more testing done specifically on baby foods and juices. For now, please check out the list and try to limit your consumption of these products until more is known.
The ELF also points out the following facts about lead:
- There is no safe level of lead, especially for children.
- Lead causes problems throughout the body, especially for children.
- The effects can be subtle but permanent, long after childhood.
- Lead exposures and effects are cumulative, over time and from multiple sources.
- Three sources of lead continue to contaminate the environment and food supply: decades of pesticide application, leaded gasoline, and airborne lead from coal-fired power plants.
