19 Feb 2010Tropical Traditions has such an interesting history. You should read about this husband and wife company here. It’s a great story about how they sought to find the most healthy products for their family and others. You can read more about their research on fats and oils here.
I love using organic products when cooking, and definitely try to buy organic groceries as often as financially possible. Sometimes the organic stuff is just too expensive! Tropical Traditions has great prices, and a wide selection of organic groceries at affordable prices. They carry items like grass-fed beef, lots of organic groceries, household cleaners, supplements, and more.
Tropical Traditions generously sent us a 5-lb bag of Whole Wheat Pastry Flour and Brown Rice Flour to review. I’ve been in a real baking mood lately, and this is just what I needed!
So far, I’ve made 2 things with the Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins, and Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Blondies! Yum!
For the Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins, I started with this recipe, and used half whole wheat flour, and added extra organic blueberries (they have them right now at Costco for a great price). It was delicious right out of the oven, but tasted a little “healthy” after they cooled down. :)
For the Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Blondies, I started with Martha Stewart’s Recipe for Chewy Oatmeal Blondies, and edited it a little. I used less sugar, less oatmeal, used half whole wheat flour and half regular all-purpose flour, and added chocolate chips. Fortunately, I happened to have all of the ingredients (organic) at home already so these were a snap to make.
They also sent over 3 jars of their signature organic coconut products – Gold Label Coconut Oil, Green Label Coconut Oil, and Expeller-Pressed Coconut Oil. I haven’t had a chance to use these yet, but I’m thinking “Best Ever Coconut Oil Waffles” sounds REALLY good, and I’m so impressed by the health benefits that everyone’s talking about! :) Click here to learn more about coconut oil.
You can purchase all of the products seen here at tropicaltraditions.com.
Tropical Traditions also has a Referral Program, so if you place an order with them as a first-time customer, please select “Referred by a friend” and in the box that says “How did you hear of us?” enter my sponsor ID number… 5858403. By telling Tropical Traditions that I referred you, you will receive a complimentary copy of the book Virgin Coconut Oil: How it has changed people’s lives and how it can change yours! by Brian and Marianita Shilhavy with your first order! This book is filled with testimonies and research showing how healthy coconut oil is, and it also includes over 85 recipes showing how one can incorporate coconut into their diet.

If I won I would make an Apple Coconut crips, like this one below!
Gluten-Free, Vegan Apple Crisp Recipe
Filling:
3 to 4 baking apples, peeled, cored, and sliced thin (⅛-inch thick)
2 to 4 tablespoons honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar
1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Topping:
1 ½ cups rolled gluten-free oats
½ cup sweet rice flour
½ to ¾ cup coconut sugar*
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon sea salt
½ cup melted virgin coconut oil (or butter)*
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Place all ingredients for the filling into a 7 x 11-inch baking pan. Gently stir together with a large spoon. A good gauge for sufficient fruit is to fill your pan almost to the top with sliced fruit. It will cook down quite a bit. See the photo below.
In a small mixing bowl stir together the oats, rice flour, sugar, cinnamon, and sea salt. Add oil and vanilla and stir together with a fork. Using your hands, crumble the topping evenly over the filling.
Bake for about 40 minutes or until the juices are bubbling up and the topping is lightly browned.
*Notes: Use organic brown sugar, Sucanat, or maple sugar in the topping instead of coconut sugar if desired. Sometimes I add 1 to 2 tablespoons more oil to the topping if the mixture seems to need it.
Lemon Juice can be omitted if you are sensitive to citrus.
Italian Plum Variation: Use 4 to 5 cups pitted, halved plums in place of the apples or a combination of the two. Toss with 3 to 4 tablespoons arrowroot; increase liquid sweetener to 4 tablespoons; omit lemon juice.

No machine or other substances are used in the extraction. “

Truly virgin coconut oils retain the fresh scent of coconuts because they haven’t been highly refined until they’re bland.

I love using coconut oil for any sauteeing! It’s so healthy and works great. I really want to try making home-popped popcorn with coconut oil. This is the recipe I’m going to follow: http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/perfect_popcorn/

I would give these to my daughter to bake with. They are on a gluten free diet and do all their own baking. She does a fantastic job. Our guests don’t even know they’re eating gluten free deserts.
