Sonicare for Kids by Philips

I haven’t written about this yet, but Brandon had 4 (that’s right, FOUR) cavities filled when he was 18 months old.  He always hated brushing teeth, and I kind of half-heartedly tried.  He would purse his lips together, bite down on the toothbrush, flail around, and turn his head from side to side.  It was really impossible to brush his teeth, so I sort of gave up.  Then one day I noticed that his teeth were a little darker – maybe it’s just plaque, I thought.  Or food remnants.  Then I started to see a little groove forming in one of his teeth.  I knew right away it was a cavity, but no one else really believed me.  I called my dentist to see if she would take a look, and she said it was near impossible.  Even after she saw it, she said it was probably nothing to worry about (keep in mind, he was crying and fighting, so she didn’t get a very good look).

Thankfully, I trusted my mommy instinct and took him to get a few other opinions from pediatric dentists, and they confirmed that he did indeed have 4 cavities (all 4 front teeth), and that it’s pretty common, especially when kids get their teeth in early.  It’s called baby bottle caries, or nursing caries, which is just another word for a cavity from milk that pools around the teeth when a child falls asleep drinking.  You don’t get cavities from the milk, per se, but the milk prevents the saliva from doing its job of keeping the teeth protected.  Parents, please BRUSH your kids’ teeth!  Even if they are babies and don’t have teeth yet or are just starting to cut their teeth, you can wipe their gums with a wet washcloth.

Long story short, he had to be completely sedated, and it was a frightening procedure (for me) that could have been easily avoided.  He’s doing just fine now, and still doesn’t like brushing, but I actually wrap him up in a towel (arms at his sides), lay him down, and brush his teeth and tongue while singing distracting songs.  :)   Whatever works, right?  We even floss with flossers now too!

img_3271

I asked my dentist if Brandon could use an electric toothbrush, and he said as long as he’s ok with the sound and vibration (which is the part that bothers most kids), then it would be great.  This toothbrush is designed for kids 4 and up, so please consult your own dentist if your child is younger.  The thing I love most about the Sonicare is that it doesn’t have the same loud noise and crazy bristle-spinning action that some other ones do.  It’s a quiet hum and vibrates softly.  Brandon also enjoys the music that plays, which tells you when to move to another quadrant of your mouth.  There are 2 modes – high and low – for different age groups, which basically means more vibration for the older kids.  It comes with 2 different brush heads, one bigger and one smaller, for different ages.  There are also interchangeable face plates so kids can customize the color of their toothbrush.

My 3-year-old does a fairly good job of brushing her teeth and letting me get in there too… but we haven’t really even attempted to brush my almost-1-year-old’s teeth. She just got them (4 teeth) in recently though, so that’s probably why I haven’t really thought about it until reading your story. I had better get with it!

My kids fight brushing their teeth. At their last dentist visit, the older one (age 5) had “lots of plaque” on his teeth and my 3 year old had her first cavity! I’m hoping to stop this trend for both of them.

I learned that “Chewing a piece of sugarless gum after meals or when your mouth feels dry will stimulate the production of saliva, which neutralizes the acid in the mouth. This can translate into fewer cavities. “

I would love the Sonicare Kids toothbrush for my 3 year old son… his brushing habits are when I remind him and he uses my Sonicare and I change the toothbrush head… but sometimes he grabs the toothbrush before I have a chance to change the brush and ends up using mine…. so having his own “fun” brush so he would only have that one to use and I can send him to his bathroom and only use

Hey Jen, in the beginning it was a struggle to brush Connor’s teeth. He doesn’t like that either but since the hubby and his brothers had teeth issues when they were little, I made sure to brush Connor’s teeth daily. This may sound kinda mean but sometimes when he’s extra fussy, I just hold his head really tight so he won’t move around and I force the toothbrush in there. I can’t do it for very long but I do the best I can. So far he has excellent oral health. Sometimes we gotta do what’s necessary. hahaha…

My son loves vibrating toothbrushes, actually that is how we get him to want to brush his teeth. He has some sensory seeking behaviors and his OT suggested using this type of toothbrush. We have tried a few and find them too rough for him. I would love for him to have this because it has different settings and he would be very happy to have a sonicare toothbrush just like mama and daddy.

I am interested in the Sonicare Healthy White toothbrush. It says that it removes everyday stains in just two weeks. I would love that!
My daughter loves caring for her teeth (hope she keeps it up!) She brushes (and asks for help to floss) after every meal without being asked. She would be thrilled to win a Sonicare toothbrush!

Bayden like to brush his teeth if he can watch me and copy my movements as I brush mine. I don’t know how good a job he is doing though. If I try to brush them he bites the tooth bush and fights, so I have to sit on him and hold his arms at his side.
He is 2 and he often wakes up in the middle of the night wanting milk. I have just been reading a lot about that and it causing cavities. So I want to get him off it…. Not so easy to switch him to water when he wakes up though.

With 6 kids I have seen the same process with all of them regarding brushing their teeth…when young, they think it is exciting. Then up to age 10 or so, it becomes a habit. Tweens get a little lax and we practically have to “pull teeth” to get them to BRUSH their teeth!!! Then, they seem to WANT that healthy smile and project that to friends and then opposite sex when they are teens. We stress the importance of avoiding sweet drinks or soda, acidic things even more than sweets. I guess it gets into crevices easier. Weve been lucky to have kids with mostly healthy teeth and lucky to have a t least minimal insurance for dental care.

We let our 2-year-old brush his own teeth in the mornings, but at night we do 1-2-3-4, where we count off each section as we (his dad or I) brush, and then finish with the “smile teeth.” If he needs extra incentive, we pretend to hunt for specific foods in his teeth, whatever he ate that day.
