If you’re like me, you have TONS of pictures and video of your family sitting on your computer or camera. I’m always so worried that my computer will crash and I will lose all my pictures. (This actually happened to me once before!) Seagate has a great product that makes it SUUUPER easy to backup your whole computer. It’s called the FreeAgent Go, and it’s the slimmest external hard drive available on the market today. I figured I’d let my husband write this review, since he’s the technology expert in our house. And now, here’s Tim…

Seagate sent us the FreeAgent Go for Mac and it rocks! It’s a really sweet external hard drive formatted especially for your Mac. This is important for us because we had some other external drives that were Windows formatted with 32-bit file systems, meaning we couldn’t store our huge HD baby delivery videos that were larger than 4GB. However, with the Mac-formatted drive, this isn’t a problem at all – especially since the FreeAgent Go includes FireWire 800!

If you’re used to USB 2.0 external drives, then the move to FireWire 800 will be a huge upgrade for you. USB 2.0 can only move copy files at 480MB/sec (the spec says this but you’ll never reach it.) FireWire 800 can do 800MB/sec, which is essentially double the speed of USB 2.0

Aside from just the technical advantages of this drive, the FreeAgent Go just plain looks good on my desk. It comes with a docking station so that you can grab your drive and take it places. For example, I’ve found that I’ve taken the drive to the office and back home several times. When I arrive at work, there’s no cables to fumble with – I can just drop it in the docking station.

If your Mac doesn’t have FireWire 800 or 400 (it most likely does), you can still use it in USB 2.0 mode.

Another awesome feature about the drive was that the first time I plugged it in, my Mac immediately asked me if I wanted to use it for Time Capsule! That was really cool! Also, it came with all the cables you could possibly need. (FireWire 800, FireWire 800 to 400, and USB). It also came with a nice leather carrying case! I had a lot of fun carrying it around in the leather case and showing it to my jealous co-workers.

The only question I had was whether I could write data even faster if the drive was faster than 5400RPM. So far, it’s been so fast that I don’t think it would matter.

In conclusion, there isn’t much bad at all I can say about this drive. It’s really fast, looks great, and has a huge amount of storage. I have others, but this is definitely the fastest. I like it so much that I might finally get around to backing up our wedding DVD to this drive.
