Natural Mat

The Natural Mat story:

Natural Mat was founded in 2000, when owners Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall, both keen sailors, became frustrated with the poor quality mattresses found on boats. With only synthetic mattresses available, they decided to look for and later create an alternative. They found natural fibers a superior substitute due to their breathable nature and ability for air to circulate through the mattress keeping it dry and clean. Natural fibers also proved to be more durable and supportive ensuring an all around, high quality mattress – the natural mat!

Spurred by the birth of Luke, his first child, in 2001, Mark and his wife realized a void in the category for a good quality natural mattress product. Subsequently, the “Natural Mat” idea grew to encompass the baby market.

Natural Mat makes 3 different types of organic crib mattresses, a mattress protector, and crib linens.  All of their products are made in England from natural and organic materials.  I think it’s great that they offer 3 different types of mattresses, depending on your needs.

The Coco Mat is made from coir (derived from the coconut tree) and has extracts of lemon, eucalyptus, and lavender, which makes it naturally anti dust mite.  The Latex Mat is more springy, and is the most hypo allergenic.  The Mohair Mat is the firmest one.

Natural Mat sent us their Organic Fitted Cotton Percale crib sheet for review.  Especially when your baby is spending so much time sleeping with their face and skin directly on the bed, and babies are more affected by toxins than adults, so I prefer that the crib and the sheets are all organic.  I’ve read all kinds of bad things about chemicals and fumes that can come out of mattresses and sheets (here’s one article), so it’s safest and most environmentally friendly to buy organic.
