Potty Training with Baby Signs

Brandon is 18 months old now, and I am still trying to get my first successful elimination on the potty.  At first, he was ok sitting on it like a chair for a while (with clothes on), but now he tries to use the potty as a step stool!  Needless to say, I don’t have any success stories to report at this time.  Check back with me in a few months.  :)

This Potty Training DVD Kit by Baby Signs was a great start, though!  It comes with a DVD with cute characters who ride the “potty train”, and each character has their own compartment in the train.  The video goes through each character’s experience with the potty, where they make the sign that they need to go potty, and then they go to the bathroom, flush, and wash their hands.  Then they show actual kids doing the signs.  Brandon was able to pay attention to the video and understand what they were doing.  He was able to imitate the sign right away, and pointed towards our bathroom when the baby went to the bathroom!

The kit also comes with a board book, an instructional booklet for parents, reward stickers, and a potty train whistle.

My son was always afraid his little fanny would fall into the toliet, so he would sit facing the back of the toliet. He felt more secure and it worked!

My suggestion: Don’t start too early. If your child isn’t ready you will frustrate yourself and him/her

My dad dropped me in the toilet once when I was getting potty trained. Needless to say I wasn’t keen on using it after that for a looong time. :)

make sure the baby shows signs of potty training readiness, otherwise training too early may backfire

I have a 9-year-old daughter who I tried potty training off and on until she just woke up one day when she was 3 years old and started using the potty all by herself – even through the night! Although it took her a while, she was easy peasy! Now I am currently potty training my 2-year-old daughter with partial success…sometimes she goes and sometimes she doesn’t, but she still wears diapers when we go out and when she takes a nap or sleeps at night. She is just not quite getting it. I also have 6-month-old son who I am dreading potty training for obvious reasons – maybe dad can help him with that; however, I’ve already started sitting him on the potty as part of “elimination communication.” But since he has failed his hearing tests, I’m going to start signing with him and I thought this product would be great, not only for my 2-year-old, but also for him when the time comes. Thanks for giving me a chance to win the Baby Signs Potty Training Kit!

I signed up for a baby bix account! The feature that stands out to me as a nursing mom is the breastfeeding tracker. Also being a certified lactation educator and breastfeeding peer counselor, I can recommend this site to my mommies to help them also!

I’m now a Facebook fan! I have two boys and signed with both of them — it eases frustration in everyday life, I bet it would be a great asset to potty training!

I would suggest letting your baby take the lead, when he/she is ready to start is a great time. Don’t push them or they will get frustrated.

I just read about Elimination Communication, found while following links from Baby Signs. I think both concepts are great!

I have been using ASL with infants and toddlers for several years and am excited that there is special sign language information for bathrooming. I could have used this information with my son, who is now 20, but am going to forward this information to my step-daughter who has a 12 week old. My first grandchild!

I am excited to learn of this and think it will be great to offer to the parents of the children I care for. I have been using ASL with the infants, toddlers and preschoolers here for the past 5 years. I finally have parents with 1 and 2 year olds who have decided to start potty training. Since most of these children have a limited vocabulary (signing and verbal) adding potty signs is going to be great!

One of the kids just turned 4 and was showing the regular ’signs’ of being ready to potty train when she was 2 years old. I only watch her part time and her schedule is very irregular. Her mom went through several thoughts, including, I’m not ready yet, She’s not ready yet, I’ll give her a deadline and she’ll do it on her own when she’s ready. With all the dithering, it took her until she was 4 to go to the bathroom on a regular basis. But before that, she would only tell mom she had to go if she wasn’t at home.

I have two older sons and a daughter that is 18 months old. My advise would be to ease into it slowly (especially with the boys) and let them decide when they are ready. Sometimes they are just so busy exploring their worlds that they don’t want to be interrupted to have to go potty.

A potty training story — we’re about where you are (18 months) and K just one night grabs daddy’s hand and says “need to poop”. Well of course we rush over to the potty, took her clothes off and sat her down. I thought “oh this is great but there’s no way she’s going to do anything”. Lo and behold, two minutes later, we had our first successful potty adventure! We were jumping up and down, K just calmly went on to the next thing like “whatever mom, it’s just the potty”. Sadly, that’s the only successful potty we’ve had in a month!

My potty training advice is not to force it, when they are ready you’ll know…if you try to force it when they are not ready it will just frustrate you both! Also, don’t compare your child with others….everyone potty trains at different times!
