Kimochis (pronounced KEY-MO-CHEE) first caught my eye at our local toy store, Ambassador Toys in Palo Alto. Their cute packaging and adorable faces made me want to open the box and hug them!  Apparently Brandon felt the same way, because as soon as we received ours in the mail, Brandon gave Cloud a big kiss!  Amazing, since he is very selective with his kisses.    He also figured out right away that the emotions go inside the character’s pocket.

But these are more than just cute stuffed animals – they are “toys with feelings inside.”  What does that mean exactly?  Each Kimochi character has a little pouch (like a kangaroo), and each character comes with 3 different emotions.  Cloud came with Happy, Sad, and Angry.  You can also purchase more emotions separately (Curious, Cranky, Left Out, Silly, Brave, Frustrated).  This allows you to discuss emotions with your child, and he or she can put the proper emotion into the little pocket to describe how he is feeling.

This whole concept is so innovative, and takes kids play to a whole new level.  When we first start teaching our kids to communicate, we seem focus so much on nouns and action verbs (eat, ball, airplane, etc) and less on emotions (happy, bored, angry, etc).   Brandon is just starting to learn how to speak, and I’m so glad that I am now learning how to help him get in touch with his emotions better.  Each Kimochi has a different personality, and comes with a booklet that will help you approach your child’s personality and allow them to develop more self-esteem and self-confidence.  You can read more on their website.
