6 Jun 2009i’ve always loved the convenience of plastic tupperware / ziploc / gladware containers. especially the cheaper ones where i’m not worried if they get left at work by my husband. i was even using them to store brandon’s snacks as an easy, lightweight way to carry around some veggie booty or bunny grahams. i left a container in the bottom of his stroller for a few days, and when i opened it, it smelled very very strongly of plastic. i’m not sure i can really explain the smell, but it wasn’t food.
i’m sure you’ve heard that if you can taste or smell the plastic, that means that chemicals are leaching out of the container. even though plastic numbers 1, 4, and 5 are supposed to be the safest, i still do not feel comfortable using them anymore. if you’re going to use them, please do NOT microwave anything in them or use them with hot foods. i’ve read that you can help to release the toxins by putting them in very hot water and then letting them air out in the sun. not sure if that works or not. i also read that you should not use most plastic wrap, because it contains bpa. there are a few brands which do not contain bpa and pvc, such as ziploc, glad, and saran wrap. there’s a good article with more details here.
i just purchased this 18-piece pyrex set on amazon, which comes with a few small containers that will be great for snacks, and some bigger ones that will be perfect for daddy’s lunch.
they also have some cute glass containers at crate and barrel, but i wasn’t sure if the lids would stay on as well.
